If you’ll be staying in a Tunisian hotel, you’ll need to pay a tourist tax. Depending on the category of your hotel, a different rate will apply. The tax was introduced in 2017, but has recently been increased in 2024.¹
Since this is an overnight tax, it will be charged per person per night, but only for the first 10 nights of your stay. The Tunisia tourist tax is applied throughout the country.¹
The tourist tax in Tunisia varies based on the accommodation category.
Those staying in 2-star hotels will need to pay 4 TND per person per night. A higher tax is charged in 3-star hotels, at 8 TND per person per night. Finally, if you plan on booking a 4- and 5-star hotel, expect to pay 12 TND per person daily.¹
The tax is only charged for the first 10 nights of your stay. So, if you’re in Tunisia for a week, you’ll pay tax for all seven days, but if you’re staying for a month, you’ll only pay the first 10 nights. For example, if two adults are staying at a 4-star hotel in Tunisia for a whole month, the tourist tax amount will be 240 TND for the entirety of their stay.¹
Children under 12 are exempt from paying the Tunisia tourist tax. However, in case they turn 12 during your holiday, they’ll need to pay the tax for the remaining nights within the 10-night period.¹
The tourist tax in Tunisia must be paid upon arrival at the hotel. In case you leave your accommodation earlier, you won’t be able to reclaim the tax.²
Since you'll be paying these fees in a different currency, using Wise could be a great solution. Wise converts your pounds at the mid-market rate, with a small conversion fee*, or no fee if you already have Tunisian dinar in your Wise account. You can also use your Wise card to withdraw cash from ATMs in Tunisia.

The tourist tax in Tunisia depends on the accommodation category. It starts at 8 TND a night and rises to 12 TND for the more exclusive hotels. The tax is only charged for the first 10 nights of your stay and children under 12 are exempt from paying it.

An airport exit tax isn’t charged in Tunisia anymore and the tourist tax is in place instead.²
It depends on where you’ll be going, but cash is generally a better option. It’s important to remember that the Tunisian dinar is a closed currency, so it will be illegal to take any leftover cash back to the UK.³
Children under the age of 12 are the only ones exempt from paying the Tunisia tourist tax. Since the tax is charged during check-in, you won’t be able to avoid it.²
