Receiving money on Revolut: What are the options to get payments?
Wondering how to receive money on Revolut in Ireland? Learn about the different methods to receive your payments.
An Post allows customers to send money overseas either from their An Post Current Account, or through the An Post partnership with Western Union.
These services can offer simple, convenient and secure ways to move your money in the SEPA area, or worldwide - but if you’re planning on sending a high value amount, it’s important to know the An Post money transfer limit for different payment types.
This guide covers the limits applied to different types of An Post international money transfer - plus we’ll look at ways to send large amounts with Wise, as another option. Wise has very high payment limits allowing you to arrange high value transfers with the mid-market rate, without even needing to leave home.
Yes. You can send large money transfers with An Post - but the An Post money transfer limit depends on the way you choose to arrange your payment.
You can send money with An Post either from your An Post Current Account¹ or by visiting a branch and arranging a Western Union transfer there.
From your An Post Current Account, you can send payments to other bank accounts in the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), which includes the EU, the UK, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino and Switzerland². Limits on these payments are fairly low.
To send money to other countries, the alternative is to go to An Post location and send it through Western Union³. Here, limits are usually much higher, but you’ll need to visit the branch in person and pay in cash.

Let’s explore the An Post money transfer limit for the different payment methods:
If you are an An Post Current Account customer you have no limit on the amounts of incoming payment you can receive. However, there’s a fairly low limit on outgoing payments of 2,000 EUR per recipient.⁴ This applies on both local and international payments.
You can only send payments in this way within the SEPA area. If you need to send money elsewhere, or if you want to send a higher amount than this, you may need to use the Western Union transfer service instead.
An Post offers Western Union transfers at all branch locations. Western Union does not usually place a limit on the value of payments you can send, but you will need to pay for your transfer in cash.⁵ An Post may also apply its own limits, which might vary depending on the type of transfer requested.
To send a payment in an An Post branch through Western Union you’ll be asked to provide some ID for verification purposes, and you may also need to provide additional documents to prove the source of the funds or reason for payment, in the case of higher value transfers.
An Post doesn’t specify exactly what may be needed - or what limits they may choose to apply - but a member of branch staff can help you through the process when you arrange your transfer.
The An Post transfer limit from current accounts can not be increased. If you choose to use Western Union in an An Post branch, you may find that you can increase the amount you can send by providing some additional information and paperwork.
If you don’t have it on you at the time you’re trying to arrange your payment you’ll likely be asked to contact Western Union directly to discuss your transfer needs.
An Post’s partnership with Western Union may mean you can send fairly high value transfers in branches - but you’ll need to compare the costs and the exchange rate available with other providers to check you’re getting the very best deal.
Making an An Post Western Union transfer might not be the most cost effective or convenient option. You’ll need to go into a branch in person and hand over the cash for your payment, plus fees. An Post might have their own limits which apply, on top of any documentary requirements from Western Union.
If you’d prefer to set up your high value transfer online or through an app, take a look at sending large amounts with Wise.

For payments of over the equivalent of 20,000 GBP (about 23,000 EUR) you’ll get an automatic fee discount, and you can talk to a dedicated support team if you need help to arrange your transfer, in case needed.
