How does a corporate card work?

A business or corporate card may be issued as a debit or credit card, and can come from a bank or a non-bank specialist provider. You may choose to get a corporate card for your own use, and you can also issue additional cards to your employee to make it easier to manage company expenses. You’ll be able to set adjustable limits for spending and withdrawals, to allow you to continue to manage your cash flow while giving your team the tools they need to do their job.

Many providers offer in-built expense management processes so that after an employee has made a business purchase on their company card, they can upload a receipt to make the accounting process simple and convenient. This can cut down on the time taken to process business expenses.

Different card issuers also have their own features and benefits, such as supporting low cost multi currency spending, or offering cards which can function both as debit or credit cards. We’ll explore some of these options for the best corporate credit cards in Singapore in this guide.

What to consider when choosing the best business credit card for your company

Different cards have their own features - which lets you pick the card which has the best balance of perks for your specific business and spending patterns. Some things to look out for include:

  • Rewards aligned with your business spending- corporate credit cards may offer cash back on all or select business spending, or ways to earn rewards and treats when you use your card
  • Low annual fees and competitive interest rates- keeping down fixed and ongoing costs is important to allow you to manage your business finances most effectively. While many cards do offer annual fee waivers for new customers, the fees for credit cards can be pretty steep, at around 200 SGD per card per year
  • Expense management tools- some providers offer in-app expense management tools which allow employees to manage their expenses with nothing more than their card and their phone - this saves time and cuts out on a lot of paperwork
  • Travel perks for business trips- many credit cards offer travel benefits aimed at business customers, like complimentary insurance and airmiles
  • Additional employee cards at no extra cost- if you plan to issue employee expense cards you’ll need to look carefully at both the fees and limits for additional virtual and physical cards. Some services like Wise Business allow you to issue employee cards with a low one time fee per card, while other company credit card options will have ongoing annual charges for every card issued

So - now you know what to look out for in a corporate credit card, let’s take a more detailed look at the providers we’ve picked out in our selection of the best company credit cards and business cards in Singapore.

Licensed non-bank business card services: an alternative to bank business cards

Throughout this guide we’ve explored both corporate credit cards issued by major banks, and a few alternatives from non-bank services.

Licensed non-bank services like Wise, YouBiz and Aspire can be a great alternative to using a bank issued corporate card, with low costs and flexible features for Singapore businesses, including:

  • Multi-currency functions to allow you to trade more easily across different countries and currencies
  • Cards typically are issued as business debit card options rather than as credit cards, making them a more affordable way to manage business spending, with no need to worry about interest or penalties.

Conclusion

The main functions of corporate cards are:

💡Different cards have their own features and fees, but what’s important is that you pick the card which offers the best benefits based on your own spending needs and transaction types. For example, if you have a lot of overseas vendors and suppliers to pay monthly, having a credit card that charges a lot of FX fees on foreign currency spending would not be the most cost-effective solution.

Using a card like the Wise Business Card can help you make international payments with low fees and transparent pricing, so you can handle cross-border transactions with no unexpected fees eating into your profits. Use this guide to decide on the best corporate card for your business spending, looking at both bank issued credit cards and non-bank alternatives for flexible, low cost spending.
