For example, you’ll pay 45 USD to send a global wire transfer from your Key Smart Checking® account or 5 USD to take out cash overseas.¹

There are a few ways to avoid foreign transaction fees abroad. Look into exactly how much your bank charges for international purchases before using your card.
Some banks may offer certain exceptions or discounts. You may also be able to get a no-fee international debit card from some financial providers.
Avoid withdrawing large sums abroad, as many banks charge ATM fees, foreign transaction fees, and exchange rates for international withdrawals.
If you do need cash, it’s typically better to withdraw one large sum rather than a few smaller sums, as you can avoid paying multiple ATM withdrawal fees.
Open an account with a money transfer provider like Wise to save on foreign transaction fees and exchange rate markups.
Wise won’t charge a fee for the first two ATM withdrawals each month if the total combined withdrawal amount does not exceed $100. After $100 is withdrawn in a month, any amount in excess will be charged a 2% fee.
After your first 2 withdrawals, there's a $1.50 charge per withdrawal. The ATM operator may charge their own fees.
All KeyBank cards come with foreign transaction fees for international purchases. You’ll pay 3% to use your credit or debit card abroad.
However, there may be some exceptions. KeyBank credit cards don’t add foreign transaction fees for Canadian transactions, for example.¹⁴
Exchange rate charges may also apply for foreign currency transactions. KeyBank credit cards use Mastercard®’s exchange rate to convert currencies for international purchases. This rate may fluctuate.¹⁰
KeyBank charges international ATM fees for cash withdrawals abroad. This includes withdrawals at KeyBank and non-KeyBank ATMs.
You’ll pay 5 USD to withdraw money overseas using your Key Smart Checking® account¹ or KeyBank Hassle-Free Account®.⁴
All international ATM transactions are also subject to a 3% foreign transaction fee and any applicable exchange rate charges.⁴
You won’t pay ATM charges for international cash withdrawals using your Key Select Checking® account, but you’ll still pay 3% of the transaction.⁶
You can avoid KeyBank’s ATM fees by using a KeyBank ATM or by exchanging cash before you go abroad, but KeyBank’s foreign transaction fees and exchange rate charges will still apply.¹
Make sure to look out for dynamic currency conversion (DCC). When you spend abroad, many retailers, restaurants, and tourist attractions may ask whether you want to pay in local currency or US dollars.
Always choose local currency. Although it may seem convenient to see how much your transaction will cost in US dollars, the merchant will exchange your transaction at their own rate.
This exchange rate is likely to be more than your bank’s currency conversion rate, which means you could end up spending more than expected for your vacation transactions.
Most banks add a markup to the standard mid-market exchange rate for currency conversion. This is how they make their money, but it can add a hefty charge to your international transactions.
You’ll pay this markup every time the bank converts a foreign currency purchase or ATM withdrawal from US dollars into the correct currency for you.
KeyBank’s exchange rates don’t seem to be publicly available, but they may not be the same as the standard interbank currency conversion rates.¹⁵
You’ll also pay Mastercard’s exchange rate to use your credit card abroad. This rate may differ from the rate Mastercard receives — and it will fluctuate depending on when you make your purchase.¹⁰
There are a few things to remember before using your card abroad:
- Look for no-fee international cards
- Tell your bank before you travel outside the US
- Avoid ATM cash withdrawals abroad wherever possible
- Don’t forget about exchange rate markups
- Avoid DCC and pay in local currency overseas
Credit cards are a good idea for larger travel purchases like your hotel or flights, as you’ll likely get fraud protection and zero liability if something goes wrong.
KeyBank offers a range of useful financial products, including credit and debit cards. You can earn interest or spend money online and in person.
However, it’s important to consider how much KeyBank charges for foreign transactions. You’ll likely pay 3% for international purchases as well as ATM withdrawal fees and exchange rate charges.
Look into all of these costs before you travel — and always compare money transfer providers to get the best deal for your trip!
